Description
The Statue of Liberty is located on a 12-acre island in the middle of New York City's harbor. Designed by the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, it was a gift of international friendship from the citizens of France in commemoration of the centennial of the United States in 1876. 46 meters tall, it's situated atop a granite pedestal above the walls of a star-shaped pillar. It was completed and inaugurated on October 28, 1886, and then designated a National Monument on October 15, 1924. The Statue of Liberty has become one of the most universal symbols of freedom and democracy worldwide. Access to the inside of the Statue's pedestal or the Crown is not included.
