Four hours north and you are in a different America: red brick, white steeples and the city where the rebellion against England began. This Boston tour covers the journey there and back in a single day, leaving at 6:15 AM from Port Authority, by private coach and with a live guide from first minute to last. The programme takes in Harvard, a stretch of the Freedom Trail and a stop at Quincy Market. It is among the most requested of our tours departing from New York.

The one day Boston tour at a glance

  • Price: $149 per person on promotion, down from $177
  • Duration: full day, returning to New York around 8:30 PM
  • Departure: 6:15 AM from Port Authority Bus Terminal, 330 W 42nd St
  • Stops: Harvard and Cambridge, Copley Square, Boston Common, Quincy Market, Tea Party site
  • Transport: private coach bus with a guaranteed seat
  • Guide: live guide on board all day, commentary in Italian
  • Lunch: stop at Quincy Market, your own choice and not included
  • Reviews: 4.6 out of 5 from 48 verified reviews
  • Cancellation: free with full refund up to 72 hours before
  • Worth knowing: do not book shows or dinner for the evening you return

Below you will find what you need before booking: how much it costs and what it covers, how the day is laid out stop by stop, how much walking is involved, and the practical details on return times, gratuities and cancellation.

How Much the Boston Tour from New York Costs

The tour is currently on promotion at $149 per person, down from $177. The fare covers the round trip transfer by private coach, a guaranteed seat and a live guide for the whole day. Children over 2 pay the full fare, while under 2s travel free.

Outside the price are lunch, taken freely during the Quincy Market stop, hotel pickup, since departure is a group meeting point at Port Authority, and the guide's gratuity, customary in the United States at around $10 per person.

Book the Smart Way

Boston in a day only works with a dawn departure and a coach that knows the route: doing the same independently means renting a car, taking on Interstate 95 traffic in both directions and hunting for parking in a city of narrow one way streets. The tour removes exactly that part. You also get support before and after purchase, a physical office a short walk from Times Square at 324 W 47th St, and a phone line staffed early on departure morning.

The Itinerary Stop by Stop

The day is built around two poles: the university campus in Cambridge, across the river, and the historic centre of Boston where American independence was born.

Harvard and Cambridge

The first stop is Cambridge, for a visit to Harvard, the oldest university in the United States. You walk through Harvard Yard, the original academic core, see the Widener Library from outside and stop at the statue of John Harvard, where tradition has visitors touch the shoe for luck. A scenic drive follows past City Hall and MIT, also in Cambridge, before crossing the Charles River towards downtown.

Copley Square and the Freedom Trail

At Copley Square you take in Trinity Church, one of the most photographed buildings in New England, its sandstone facade mirrored in the glass tower beside it. From there the day continues on foot along a stretch of the Freedom Trail, the route linking the sites of the American Revolution, crossing Boston Common, the oldest public park in the United States.

Quincy Market and the Tea Party

The lunch stop is at Quincy Market, the covered market beside Faneuil Hall, where you eat while walking between the stalls: the two things to try are clam chowder, served in a bread bowl, and the lobster roll. In the afternoon you visit the site of the Boston Tea Party, the harbour where crates of tea went into the water in 1773 and the road to independence began. Departure for New York is in the late afternoon.

Our tip

Make no plans for the evening you return. Arrival in New York is scheduled for around 8:30 PM, but it depends on Interstate 95 traffic: a Broadway show or a dinner reservation that night is the surest way to spoil an otherwise excellent day.

What the Tour Includes

  • Guided day tour of Boston with a live guide on board
  • Private transfer by coach bus, round trip from New York
  • Guaranteed seat on board for every participant
  • Visit to Harvard University with a walk through Harvard Yard
  • Lunch break at Quincy Market, with free time among the stalls

Hotel pickup and drop off, the guide's gratuity and meals are not included, with meals left to your own choice during the stops. A note on language: the commentary on this tour is delivered in Italian, and the guide may alternate languages when the group includes travellers from different countries. If you need English commentary throughout, contact us before booking.

How Much Walking Is Involved and How the Day Is Paced

This is worth asking before you book, because a day like this has a fixed rhythm that does not suit everyone.

New York and Boston are around 215 miles apart: four hours of driving out and four back, so a good share of the day is spent seated on the coach. Actual time in the city runs from late morning to late afternoon.

On the ground there are three short but real walks: Harvard Yard, the Freedom Trail stretch across Boston Common, and the Quincy Market area. None of them needs any training, but comfortable shoes and a willingness to stay on your feet do help. Boston is walked because that is the only way to see it properly, and in winter the wind off the Atlantic makes it colder than the thermometer suggests. Other destinations reachable in a single day sit among our United States excursions.

What to Know Before Booking

  • Arrive 15 minutes before 6:15 AM at Port Authority Bus Terminal, 330 W 42nd St, between 8th and 9th Avenue
  • If the coach has left the tour is forfeited, with no refund or date change, since the destination is four hours away
  • Book nothing for the evening: the return is scheduled for around 8:30 PM but depends on traffic
  • Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before with a full refund, after which a 100% penalty applies
  • The tour runs in rain or snow: participants are contacted only in cases of force majeure
  • Coach seats are not assigned: the guide allocates them by availability and seating together cannot be promised
  • Smoking is not allowed on board, electronic devices included
  • The tour may be multilingual when the group includes travellers from different countries

If you want to add another east coast city on a different day of the same trip, many visitors pair this with the Philadelphia and Amish Country day tour.
