An airboat has no propeller under the water: it glides over a hand's depth of marsh, pushed by an aircraft fan, and it is the only way to genuinely get inside the River of Grass. This Everglades day trip from Miami Beach runs three and a half hours, includes round trip transport and a 30-35 minute airboat ride, from $139 per person. It is one of the most requested of our Miami tours.

Below you will find what you need before booking: how much it costs and what it covers, how the three and a half hours unfold, which time of year gives you the best odds of seeing an alligator, and the practical details on language, clothing and cancellation.

How Much the Everglades Tour from Miami Costs

The price starts at $139 per adult and $75 for children aged 1 to 6. The fare covers round trip transport from Miami Beach, park admission, the 30-35 minute airboat ride and a guide who stays with the group for the whole excursion. There is no further child reduction beyond the bracket already shown, because the cost of the service is the same for every passenger on board.

Book the Smart Way

Airboats depart in batches and each run holds a limited number of seats, so during the dry months between December and April, when Miami is busiest, dates sell out weeks ahead. Booking online lets you pick the day that fits the rest of your stay instead of taking whatever is left. You also get support before and after purchase, a physical office in New York at 324 W 47th St, and your voucher by email once the order is confirmed.

What the Excursion Includes

  • Park visit to the Everglades with admission included
  • Airboat ride of 30-35 minutes in search of alligators, with a Park Ranger aboard
  • Round trip transport by car or bus from Miami Beach
  • Live guide for the whole ground portion of the excursion

Hotel pick up and drop off are not included, since departure is from a fixed group meeting point, and neither is the guide's gratuity, which is customary in the United States and left to you.

One point that needs stating plainly: the guide on this tour delivers the commentary in Italian, and aboard the airboat the narration is handled by an English speaking Park Ranger. If you need the ground commentary in English throughout, contact us before booking and our team will tell you what fits. The airboat portion is in English for everyone, on every operator, because the Ranger belongs to the park rather than to us.

When to Go if You Actually Want to See Alligators

No operator guarantees alligator sightings, because these are wild animals in an ecosystem of a million and a half acres. The odds are not the same all year round, though, and that is the single most useful thing to know before picking a date.

In the dry season, from November to April, water levels drop and wildlife concentrates around the remaining pools, the so called gator holes: this is when animals are most visible, temperatures stay between 15 and 27 degrees, and mosquitoes are almost absent. In the wet season, May to October, the landscape is greener and more luxuriant but heat regularly passes 32 degrees, afternoon showers are frequent, and the wildlife spreads across a far wider sheet of water.

Time of day matters too: alligators are most active in the cool hours of the morning and in the late afternoon, when they come out to regulate their body temperature. The 8:45 AM departure of this excursion falls inside the first of those two windows, which is why the timing is not arbitrary.

Our tip

Leave the bright colours at the hotel and bring a light waterproof jacket. The airboat throws up spray and the wind over the marsh is colder than the thermometer in Miami Beach suggests: anyone who sets off in a tank top comes back chilled, even in March.

How the Three and a Half Hours Unfold

The meeting point is at 8:45 AM in front of the Miami Beach Post Office, at the corner of Washington Avenue and 13th Street. From there the route leaves the city westward along the Tamiami Trail, the historic road that cuts across southern Florida and runs along the northern edge of the park. The transfer is where the guide covers how the Everglades formed and how the River of Grass works, the very slow sheet of water sliding from Lake Okeechobee down towards the bay.

On arrival you board the airboat, a flat bottomed craft driven by an aircraft fan that lets it skim over a few inches of water and pick up real speed on the open channels. Across the 30-35 minutes afloat you pass hidden channels and lagoons among the mangroves and dwarf palms, with the chance of spotting alligators, turtles, herons and the roseate spoonbills that nest in the sawgrass prairie. You are back in Miami Beach by late morning.

If you would rather have the same adventure without a group and on your own schedule, there is also the private Everglades tour with optional Miami add-on, built for families and small groups who prefer a dedicated vehicle.

What to Know Before Booking

  • Arrive a few minutes before 8:45 AM: if you are late the tour is forfeited, and where possible you can join on another day
  • The tour runs in the rain, so bring an umbrella and a waterproof jacket
  • Avoid bright colours in what you wear, as they make wildlife harder to approach
  • Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before, after which the tour is neither refundable nor changeable
  • Groups over 7 people follow different terms: full refund up to 15 days before, 50% penalty inside that window
  • If the minimum number is not reached you are contacted by the day before to cancel, change date or upgrade to a private tour
  • The tour may be multilingual when the group includes travellers from different countries
  • The excursion is not recommended for children under 6, given the noise of the airboat and the length of the transfer

The rest of our Florida and east coast day trips sit alongside this one among our United States excursions.

Important

After booking you will receive a confirmation and then your voucher by email: please check your spam folder too, as it sometimes ends up there. The itinerary may vary on public holidays or during special events. Sightings of alligators and other wildlife depend on natural conditions and remain outside our control, just as no responsibility can be taken for damage to or loss of personal belongings during the excursion. Il Mio Viaggio a New York has been looking after travellers in Florida for years and remains available to help you pick the right date before you buy.
