What You See on the Harlem Tour with Gospel Service
The route takes you into the soul of Harlem, once known only as “the Black neighborhood” and today a melting pot of different cultures. You pass by the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, the largest neo-Gothic cathedral in the world, admire the Apollo Theater and the Victoria Theater from the outside, where Michael Jackson’s star first began to shine, and walk through the typical brownstone houses before arriving at the church for the gospel service. If before you go you want to understand which churches to choose, the opening hours, and the access rules, read our guide on where to attend a gospel service in New York.
The gospel service is an authentic religious celebration, made up of songs performed by the congregation: it is not a professional choir performance, and this is exactly what makes it a unique experience. Our founder Piero Armenti has been accompanying Italian travelers to these places for years, and the tour is based on that direct knowledge of the neighborhood, which you can also find in the other itineraries curated by our Italian tour guide in New York.
Sunday or Tuesday Gospel Tour: Which One to Choose
This is the Sunday morning tour, with a gospel service in a real church in Harlem, and it is the right choice if you are looking for a more immersive neighborhood experience. If you are in New York during the week instead, there is the Tuesday gospel service tour in Midtown, which takes place on foot in the heart of Manhattan and ends with a gospel service in Midtown, not in Harlem. Two different experiences: the neighborhood atmosphere on Sunday, and the convenience of the city center on Tuesday.
