What You Will See: From Brooklyn Heights Promenade to Hamilton Park
The tour departs at 6:00 PM and crosses Manhattan by coach bus to Brooklyn Heights, the oldest neighborhood in Brooklyn. The first stop is the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, a 557-metre walkway cantilevered above the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway: its southern half opened on 7 October 1950, the northern half on 7 December 1951, while the highway underneath only carried traffic from 1954. You can walk the whole length in about ten minutes, with Lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty in a single frame.
The bus then continues into New Jersey, with a stop in Hoboken to taste a slice of real American cheese pizza. It is the break that splits the evening in two, and it also gives the sky the time it needs to change colour before the final stop.
The grand finale is Hamilton Park in Weehawken: a viewpoint on top of the Palisades overlooking the Hudson, built on the grounds of the former Eldorado Amusement Resort. From here the Manhattan skyline is not a glimpse but a full frontal view, from the Empire State Building to the towers of Hudson Yards, with thousands of lights reflected on the river.
Next to the park, on Hamilton Avenue, stands the monument to Alexander Hamilton: the bronze statue dates from 1935 and is the work of John Rapetti, an Italian sculptor who had worked on the Statue of Liberty as a young man. Below the cliff, on 11 July 1804, Hamilton fought his duel with Aaron Burr, the scene that closes the Broadway musical. In practice, if you are after sunset over the skyline, aim for April, September or early October. If you would rather walk the Promenade in daylight and save the lights for the finale, June and July are your months. Either way the last stop is always after dark, because the bus reaches Hamilton Park in the final hour of the tour.
Our tip
Arrive at the meeting point at least 15 minutes early and bring a light sweatshirt even in high summer: Hamilton Park is outdoors, on top of the Palisades, and the wind coming off the Hudson is noticeable. Start with a fully charged phone too, because between the Promenade and the Weehawken viewpoint there is no shortage of shots worth framing.
What to Know Before Booking
A few useful details so you arrive prepared on the evening of the tour.
- Evening and seasonal tour: it runs every Thursday from April to October, and in August also on Sunday evenings, departing at 6:00 PM from the meeting point at Kiehl’s, 678 9th Avenue (corner of 47th Street).
- Suitable for everyone, including families with children. It is not suitable for guests who use a wheelchair or who cannot get on and off the bus independently.
- Rain or snow: the tour operates as scheduled. If visibility is reduced by the weather no refund is provided, so check the forecast and, if needed, cancel within 48 hours.
- Bus seats: they are assigned based on availability at the time, and sitting together is not guaranteed.
- Tip: not included and recommended, usually around $5 per person. Smoking is not permitted onboard, including all smoking devices.
- Late arrivals: if the bus has already left we will try to reschedule you for another date when possible, but no refund is provided.
New York at Night: How to Fit the Evening Tour Into Your Trip
